Experience Requirements

A valid boating licence is required to charter with Island Bareboat Charters. It is a requirement to have a minimum of 2 people to charter a boat regardless of your planned trip.

In order to have a safe and happy holiday you should have:

  • basic coastal navigation experience – this requires you to know how to use a chart and compass to get from point A to point B without running aground

  • basic boat handling experience – you should have been in charge of a boat before, and know boating rules

When you book a charter with us we will send you an Online Training Course which will assist us in determining your level of knowledge and experience. This assist us in determining where you can take the vessel for your charter.

Note: holders of recreational boat licenses are not automatically qualified to take out a bareboat. It is not a requirement to have boat parking skills. Upon departure Island Bareboat Charters will take your boat out of the marina and on return will berth your boat at the marina.

Travel Insurance

All charter fees are due and non-refundable 60 days prior to your charter commencement.

Bareboat Hirer's Liability Insurance

The Bareboat Hirer’s Liability Policy through Oceanic Marine Risks is an additional policy and is designed to be taken out in addition to the standard policies above as it covers an entirely different range of things. It is designed to protect you from claims made against you or members of your charter party for:

  • Property Loss

  • Accidental Death and Bodily Injury

caused by (or as a result of) your negligence.

Note: the boat’s standard insurance policy will not automatically apply if a claim is made against you for negligence.

For this policy to apply to you, the hired boat or the tender must be involved in the loss.

Security Bond

As a condition of the boat owners’ insurance, we require a security bond to be lodged. This is processed as a pre-authorisation on a credit card. The pre-authorisation freezes the availability on your credit card and no money is withdrawn from your account, however you do need to have this sum available in your account for the pre-authorisation to be possible. If the boat is damaged we will then withdraw the money from your account. The most you are liable for is $3000.

We recommend that your take out travel insurance from the moment your charter fees become non-refundable (60 days prior to travel). If you are covered with the recommended travel insurance, you would be able to make a claim on the travel insurance for the majority of the security bond should you damage the boat.

Option 1: Security Bond

  • Credit card pre-authorisation only for $3000.

  • Plus we suggest you take out the TopSail travel insurance.

Cancellation Policy
  • If you cancel more than 60 days from the charter commencement date, there are two options:

  1. If you cancel a $110 administration fee applies, but the remainder of your deposit will be refunded.

  2. If you defer your entire 20% deposit can be held in trust for up to 5 years to be applied to another charter with us.

  • If you cancel within 60 days of the charter commencement date, the fees are totally non-refundable.

  • We highly recommend you take out the recommended travel insurance policy to protect you if you need to cancel after the fees have become non-refundable
